Wearing flowers in her hair and skipping for joy, Keira Knightley got married in a low-key in the south of France on Saturday.
The actress, 28, exchanged vows with James Righton, 29, in a low-key ceremony, with just 11 of her closest friends and family.
Mr and Mrs Righton, as they have now become, tied the knot at the town hall in Mazan, a small town around 12 miles from Marseilles.

Knightley, who is worth £30 million, could have have had her pick of cars to pick her up from the wedding and take her to the reception around three miles away.
But the actress chose a silver Renault Clio, which seemed befitting for her casual country-style wedding.
She looked low-key but elegant in a strapless white dress with a tuille skirt and pale pink pumps.
She wore a cropped Chanel jacket on top and her hair was left loose, with a daisy-chain style garland around her head.

The short ceremony took place just before 12 midday and guests gathered at the doors as the couple skipped out hand in hand.
Miss Knightley clutched a bouquet and allowed Mr Righton to lead her to the car.
The guests were also dressed casually. Mother of the bride, Sharman MacDonald, who is hosting a reception this afternoon, wore a blue and white silk dress while Mr Righton's father, Nicholas, and brother, Bill, dressed down in chinos.

'It was a very moving ceremony,' said an onlooker. 'Keira looked extremely moved by the whole thing - there were certainly tears of happiness.
'It was sunny day without a cloud in the sky. There were cheers of "Well done, Keira" when she came out, but there were so few people present so they didn't make much noise.
'It was amusing to see them being driven away in a battered old Renault Clio - it certainly looked as though it had seen better days.'

Some of the guests returned to the nearby Chateau de Mazan, where they are staying, to toast the happy couple with champagne.
Others headed straight to Ms Macdonald's £3 million house, about three miles outside of the medieval Provence town.
The eight-bedroom property, which is shielded by conifers, sits among 20 acres of vineyards and olive trees.

Neighbours include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who own a 17th century manor house nearby.
Later tonight Mr Righton's band, the Klaxons, will entertain guests at an after-party in a marquee in the garden.
It is thought that around 50 will attend, including Miss Knightley's former co-star, Hollywood actress Sienna Miller.

The couple have employed a catering team to serve the wedding dinner and 120 bottles of wine have been bought from local vineyard Chateau Minuty.
It is understood that they will throw a second party to celebrate their wedding when they return to Britain.
One guest told the Daily Mail: 'It's a beautiful location for the wedding. They're very, very lucky. It's just the perfect time of year for it as well, they couldn't have picked a better weekend weather-wise.'

'It was not a long service," says one witness. "and very few people ... The ceremony occurred just before noon and lasted only about 30 minutes. Keira looked beautiful. She wore a very pretty, very classic dress."

Knightley's choice for her big day? A strapless tulle dress that came to her knees and a classic Chanel jacket. She skipped into the church in small flats and her hair down.

Fifty to 100 guests were reportedly invited to the celebration, which were held close to the couple's vacation villa in in the picturesque hills near Avignon. A reception tent was spotted there on Friday, and the couple smooched in the airport when Righton arrived earlier in the week.

Knightley and the Klaxons keyboard player, 29, got engaged in May 2012, about a year after they were first spotted publicly together. They reportedly met after being introduced by fashion correspondent Alexa Chung.

Buzz has been that Knightley, the face of Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance, would wear a custom-made dress by Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld.

"We're not really big-wedding types," she told Marie Claire in March. "I could have six fake weddings. God, that would be expensive. I don't need to have all that."

Keira Knightley and Tallulah Harlech stood at the threshold of a mock-up Chanel boutique, circa 1913, and discussed the scene they were about to shoot for Karl Lagerfeld’s latest production for Chanel.Cast as the budding fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel, Knightley would have a brush with Harlech’s character, Eve Lavallière — a stage actress and, reputedly, the first fashionable woman in France to cut her hair short and parade around hatless.

“Do it your way, huh?” Lagerfeld told the two actresses as they rehearsed their lines.

While every detail of the short film was worked out in his head, Lagerfeld explained that he encourages some improvisation with the dialogue for a more natural effect.

“Keira can deliver her lines easier than the others,” he said, referencing the fact that many of the cast members are models rather than professional actors, including such Chanel regulars as Stella Tennant, Jake Davies, Baptiste Giabiconi and Brad Kroenig.

For Knightley, who initially thought it might be a silent movie, discovering her lines moments before the cameras rolled was a first.“Karl Lagerfeld stage manages the actor in a truly direct way,” she marveled.

As it turned out, Knightley and Harlech would flub several takes of their scene as temperatures rose on the brightly lit set, an entire street in the seaside town of Deauville vividly recreated in a vast hall at Luc Besson’s new studios, the Cité du Cinéma, on the northern fringe of Paris.

“I think we better start again. I ground to a halt there,” Knightley said with laugh.

While the two women took a break, Lagerfeld put the finishing touches on Ashleigh Good’s costume for the next scene, selecting jewels from a tray held aloft by an assistant.

Titled “Once Upon a Time…,” the movie is to be screened on May 8 in Singapore, the night before a showing of Chanel’s cruise collection at Loewen Cluster, formerly a nutmeg plantation.

As with all Lagerfeld films, expect a witty story line, salty exchanges — and a slightly embellished version of social and fashion history.

“Invented reality,” Lagerfeld declared, twiddling his fingers with delight, as he roamed the vast set.

What Lagerfeld doesn’t whitewash is the reality of social customs a century ago.

“The way clients behaved in boutiques back then, they were pretty rude,” the designer said, recounting some of the choice barbs he penned.

In one scene, an American woman enters the sparsely merchandised shop, which then sold mostly hats and some resort clothes made from men’s underwear fabrics, foreshadowing Chanel’s borrowed-from-the-boys wardrobe of tweeds, cardigan jackets and the like.

“Is this a shop? There’s no shopkeeper,” the woman, played by Lindsey Wixson, snipes.

While feigning disinterest in the selection Chanel flouted, Wixson said upon her departure that she would take them all and send her secretary by with payment. “By the way, I’m Miss Wonderbilt,” would be her parting words. (While a fictional character, her name evokes a certain American dynasty.)

Lagerfeld tapped into a pivotal moment in fashion — when Edwardian strictness was yielding to a freer look for women, in hairstyles, clothes and even body language.

Among the characters in the film is Jacqueline Forzane, a Swedish countess credited with inventing what Lagerfeld called the “modern attitude of women,” rejecting the contrived posture women had endured.

While the designer isn’t fond of anniversaries, nor does he consider himself nostalgic, he marveled at the microcosm that was Deauville before the First World War.

“There was a kind of luxury and elegance, for the ones that had money,” the designer said of the French bourgeois and international notables that gathered there.

Characters in the film include Georges Carpentier, a famous boxer at the time, portrayed by Sébastien Jondeau; aristocrat Lady de Grey, played by Tennant, and the writer Vita Sackville-West, impersonated by model Saskia de Brauw.

Lagerfeld designed the understated cream ensembles worn by Knightley and Clotilde Hesme, who plays the role of Chanel’s aunt and great friend Adrienne — while the 100 or so extras teeming on the streets were outfitted in historic costumes.

To be sure, documentation around the premise of the film — the 100th anniversary of Chanel’s Deauville outpost — is far from exhaustive.

“What is lacking, I invent,” the designer said conspiratorially.

Keira Knightley to star as Coco Chanel in Karl Lagerfeld film

Chanel's creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, is to turn his hand to directing this week with the shooting of a short movie starring the Keira Knightley.

The British actor will play Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in the film to mark the French fashion house's 100th anniversary. It will be filmed in the chic seaside town of Deauville, where the first Chanel boutique opened in 1913, financed by her lover Captain Arthur "Boy" Capel, a wealthy British aristocrat.

The cast also includes model Stella Tennant and actor Tallulah Harlech, daughter of Lagerfeld's longtime friend and collaborator Lady Amanda Harlech.

Lagerfeld, Chanel's head designer, has ordered the building of "detailed retro sets" in the seaside resort where, in the days before she became an international success, Chanel used to send her sister, Antoinette, and aunt, Adrienne, to parade through the streets wearing her creations to attract customers.

Knightley, 27, is the face of the brand's Coco Mademoiselle perfume campaign, for which she was handpicked by Lagerfeld, who has described her as one of his muses. The designer is rumoured to be working on the actor's wedding gown for her marriage to James Righton.

"Karl's amazing. He's an avid reader, and he speaks about five different languages, so he'll be rattling off in English to you and in French to someone else, and in German to someone else and then the phone rings and he's speaking in Italian," Knightley said recently.

The film – which will also feature French actor Clotilde Hesme as Adrienne, as well as model Brad Kroenig and his four-year-old son, Hudson, who is Lagerfeld's godson – will be screened at Chanel's Cruise Show in Singapore in May.

Lagerfeld, who is in his 70s but refuses to give his birth date, is known for his disciplined approach to projects, including his hobby, photography. He has published several books of photographs and in 1996 was awarded a cultural prize from the German Society of Photography.

Although he played himself in the 2006 film La Doublure, it is thought to be the first time he has been the other side of a movie camera.

He was awarded France's highest honour, the Légion d'honneur in 2010.

"Oh my, that’s quite sexual." Keira Knightley is studying a . . . what exactly is that? She bends toward a bulbous aquamarine glass flute with a sinewy neck and floral spout and squints to read the placard. "Of course, it's a rosewater sprinkler!" She says, laughing. "And to think, until now I've been just spraying my rosewater about carelessly. I was doing the wrong thing, wasn't I?"

We're at an exhibition of Islamic art at the Museum of Arts and Design on New York's Columbus Circle; the treasures are from the fabled Honolulu estate Shangri-la of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, who spent her life collecting art and men in equal measure. The curious nature of some of the objects has Knightley resorting to reading the placards, though "I get quite pissed off at being told what to think. Maybe I'm a savage dumb person, but I want to believe it is what I believe it is." As Knightley wanders through the show, she considers that the collection is drawn from just one of Duke's many pleasure domes — Duke also kept palaces in Newport, Rhode Island; Beverly Hills; and Hillsborough, New Jersey — and takes stock of just how far she herself is from settling down and building these sorts of statement houses.

"I'm still a traveler," says the actress, who recently moved from a loft to a reportedly $3.8 million house in London's East End with her fiancé, Klaxons keyboardist James Righton, 29. "We love it, but it's not the house. . . I don't have anything valuable. Everything in our house is designed so you can spill things on it."

She pauses before a case full of intricate jewelry encrusted with hundreds of diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. She starts to walk away and then turns back. "They're real, aren't they?" She points to a necklace with enough bling to propose to the borough of Manhattan. "Could you imagine dancing in that? If you lost it? I won't be defined by objects, I just won't." It takes walking amid a billionaire's baubles to realize that Knightley is about as practical and grounded as a 27-year-old international star can be. (The Sunday Times estimates her own fortune at more than $48 million.) "My mom [Sharman Macdonald] is a playwright — she was an actress — and my dad [Will Knightley] is an actor, and we managed to go on holidays, but there were periods when they were hugely out of work and wouldn't know if they could keep the house. It's a very insecure profession. I've always seen it for what it is. So when I started getting work, it's like this tiny space opened up and I needed to jump in and go with it. It could all go away tomorrow." Later on, she would say, "I'm not sure I can define success. I think if I get to the end of my life having hurt as few people as possible, I will be happy, making sure that the people who mean the most to me know they've been loved. Success in work, whatever work, will come and go."

With security guards and publicity minders in tow, she had arrived in a wasp-waisted purple- and-pink floral dress, dark tights, and loafers. "Can you read it?" she asks, holding up the back of her collar when asked about the designer. "I don't remember.” Despite not knowing the label (it's Ganni, a Danish brand), she's been muse to a number of designers, including Karl Lagerfeld as the face of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume. "I like the fantasy of fashion," she says. "Creating a different person and dressing up like her. Putting on a flowery dress when it’s raining brightens up the world."

"The first thing that springs to mind is the 1940s," says actress and longtime friend Sienna Miller. "I think of her as glamorous in that kind of timeless movie star way, but she can be grungy in this very cool '90s way. You say this about people who have style, but it's true: She genuinely doesn't think about the way she looks or how she puts herself together. She could throw on a bin bag and look beautiful."

That scene will haunt your dreams. The sex is fraught. Maybe a great love scene needs to be fraught—in Anna Karenina, we had a choreographer direct the love scenes. They were like dances, which somehow made it easier for me to concentrate on Anna’s emotions. With Vronksy, her lover, she’s like an addict—she probably never had an orgasm before she was with him, and she equates that with love. Directo Joe Wright's vision for the Leo Tolstoy classi "Anna Karenina" as been called "bold," "daring" and "ambitious" — words that could also be used to describe the effect the director and his leading lady Keira Knightley, have on each other.

"Keira is quite fearless, and she encourages me to go to places I wouldn't necessarily be brave enough to go to myself," says Wright, who proceeded with the film only after Knightley, whom he'd directed to an Oscar nomination in 2005's "Pride and Prejudice," had agreed to take on the lead role.

Still, his gutsy new vision for the Tolstoy classic — it's set mostly on the premises of a decaying theater, including a horse race scene that thunders across a proscenium stage — was a surprise he dropped on the actress a mere 10 weeks ahead of filming.

"He said, 'Come around to my office. I need to explain something to you,'" remembers Knightley, seated recently beside Wright over tea at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. "I went in and it was covered with drawings of this old stage, and I went, 'Oh ..."

"You said it was going to polarize people, and they're going to love it or hate it," says Wright.

"But it was so ballsy that I was really impressed," says Knightley. "And I said, 'Yeah, go on then. Polarizing people is good.'"

The movie has inspired more rave reviews than pans since its mid-November opening, proving once again that the two of them seem to do their best work together (they also teamed for "Atonement," which won th Golden Globe or bes dramain 2008 and landed six Oscar nominations). As in similar cinematic relationships &mdash Woody Allen n Diane Keaton, say, o Frank Capra n Jimmy Stewart mdash; it's a case of a director finding a star who seems to embody the spirit of what he wants to say.

"Keira's a bit of a punk rocker in that she refuses to conform to the image people project onto her and onto women in general," says Wright. "We share a kind of rebellious nature. If someone tells us to do something, we'll very often do the opposite."

When fate first threw them together, neither was keen to meet the other. Wright had been compelled by his producer, Tim Bevan, to fly from London to a movie set in Canada to meet Knightley, then 18, for the lead role of Elizabeth Bennett in "Pride and Prejudice." "He said he'd greenlight the movie if I got her," says Wright, who was tackling his first feature film. "That's the only reason I went."

"My agent said I had to meet Joe, and I said, 'There's no point; I'm not going to get this,'" says Knightley. "There was a level of antagonism on both sides, and it led to quite an icy meeting."

"I remember it as being quite heated," counters Wright. His flight was delayed, and he arrived two hours late to find Knightley waiting for him in the hotel bar. "She was in a state," he recalls. It was 11 p.m., and she had to be up at 4:30 a.m. to be back on the set. "She had an attitude — she questioned everything. There was nothing placid or pretty about her behavior. I knew that Lizzy had to have a fire in her belly, and I came away from it thinking, 'Yep, she's Lizzy Bennett."

"Did you? I never knew that," says Knightley. The movie, which reaped an unexpected box-office bonanza, changed both their careers. "He was one of the only people that believed in me as someone other than a pretty girl who could pout a bit. I'd already had a level of fame, but I knew I was at the beginning, trying to learn things. Here was somebody going, 'You've got some work to do, but you're good.'" She laughs.

The liquid fire she brings to her acutely felt character work has never been more evident than in her complex, grown-up and devastating portrayal of Anna Karenina, the Russian antiheroine whose affair with a young officer destroys her marriage and her place in society. "I'm not sure that I modernize characters," says Knightley. "I just respond to their emotional lives, and I don't think we've changed that much, as people."

"It's a clearing away of all the period stuff," says Wright of their mutual approach. "To get down to how we relate to them as human beings."

Each was raised in a British theatrical family, but the symbiosis between the director and the actress goes even deeper — both ar dyslexic, which means they struggle with reading and develop other ways to discover meaning.

"You find other patterns and make other connections that you can understand," Wright says.

"I guess it means that we communicate in a similar way," Knightley adds.

Their homes in London are just a few doors apart, but when they get together, it's usually to talk about their personal lives, they say. Each of them fell in love with someone they met during that first film collaboration — Wright wit Rosamund Pike, who played Elizabeth Bennett's sister Jane, and Knightley with acto Rupert Friend, with whom she had a long relationship. Both have moved on; Wright is now married to Anoushka Shankar, with whom he has a toddler son, Zubin, while Knightley is engaged to marry James Righton, the keyboardist in Klaxons, a British rave band.

"The kind of work we do is about revealing yourself, which can make you quite vulnerable," says Wright. "So it's good to be around people who know you and who you trust, and who you love, basically. By the time we got to doing 'Anna Karenina,' Keira had been through some stuff that wasn't great but that was … "

"Useful," Knightley supplies, laughing.

"You can't help but put your life experience into your work," says Wright. "There's more emotion available to her now, when she's able to let her guard down and access it."

Even so, working with Wright can be a challenge, Knightley allows. "It's all consuming," she says. "It's 150%, total obsession. There isn't a life outside of it."

"I resent any life outside it," Wright confirms with a smile.

"Still," ays Knightley. "I'd rather that than someone saying, 'It's just a job; don't worry about it.' It's difficult at times but always incredibly inspiring."
